Is 8 lucky for a car (and why people avoid 4)
Ask ten people in an RTO queue and you will hear that 8 is a heavy number and 4 is a bad one. Indian numerology does say something like that, but the full answer depends on whose birth number is doing the reading. This guide gives the table, the reasoning attached to each number, and a way to test any plate.
It is a number game, not advice. A plate has no effect on how a car behaves.
First, which 8 and which 4
There are two places a number shows up: the plate total and your own mulank. The plate total is the sum of the plate's digits reduced to 1 to 9. Your mulank is your day of birth reduced the same way.
A plate such as MH20AA1185 has digits 2, 0, 1, 1, 8, 5. They sum to 17, then 1 + 7 = 8. The plate has a total of 8, even though the digit 8 appears only once. And a plate with no 8 or 4 can still total 8 or 4: KA03JK1333 has digits 0, 3, 1, 3, 3, 3, which sum to 13, then 4.
So "avoid 4" is not the same as "avoid the digit 4". The convention looks at the total.
The case for and against 8
8 belongs to Saturn in this system. Saturn is the planet of discipline, delay and hard work. People who like the number say it rewards patience. People who avoid it say it brings slow going.
The friendship table puts it plainly:
- Plate total 8 is a friend to: mulanks 6, 7 and 8.
- Neutral to: mulanks 5 and 9.
- A clash for: mulanks 1, 2, 3 and 4.
That is a narrow set of friends. If you are mulank 1, 2, 3 or 4 you would normally skip a total of 8. If you are 6, 7 or 8, it is a good plate. See plate total 8 for the example plates, and mulank 8 if you are an 8 yourself.
Note the odd one: 8 clashes with the Sun number, 1, from the other side too. A mulank 1 owner scores an 8 plate as a clash, and a mulank 8 owner scores a total of 1 as a clash. The table is symmetric here.
The case against 4
4 belongs to Rahu, the shadow planet. Rahu is tied to the irregular, the unexpected and the unconventional, and that reputation is why many buyers avoid 4 even when the table would allow it.
By the table:
- Plate total 4 is a friend to: mulanks 4, 5, 6 and 7.
- Neutral to: mulanks 1 and 3.
- A clash for: mulanks 2, 8 and 9.
So 4 is not universally bad in the table. It suits four mulanks and is tolerable for two more. The general dislike comes from the Rahu association, not the arithmetic. See plate total 4 for detail.
A separate superstition about the digit 4
In China, Japan and Korea, 4 is avoided because the word for it sounds like the word for death. That tradition is not part of Indian numerology, but it travels with the same advice, and the two get mixed up in conversation. If someone tells you to avoid 4 for that reason, it is a different rule from the friendship table.
How to test a plate yourself
- Add the plate's digits, ignoring letters.
- Reduce to one digit.
- Find your mulank: day of birth, reduced.
- Look up the pair in the table.
Example: you were born on the 10th, so mulank 1. The plate GJ01BB2518 has digits 0, 1, 2, 5, 1, 8, summing to 17, then 8. Total 8 against mulank 1 is a clash. Try the neighbouring plate GJ05CD2481, with digits 0, 5, 2, 4, 8, 1 summing to 20, then 2. Total 2 against mulank 1 is a friend.
The calculator runs this for any plate and shows the trail.
If you are stuck with an 8 or a 4
If you already own the plate, treat the result as information. Practitioners who take the table seriously sometimes suggest choosing a vehicle colour or a different number for the next purchase. This site does not make claims about remedies.
If you are still at the booking stage, the usual move is to drop clashes and choose between friends. How to book a fancy number online on Parivahan covers the process. For the general method, read how to choose a car number as per numerology.
Remember that the letters on the plate may change the total under a letters-included convention. See digits only or letters too.
