Lucky number for a bike or scooter
The numerology rules for a two-wheeler are the same as for a car. The plate total is worked out the same way, and it is compared with the same birth number, your mulank. What changes is the buying situation: bikes and scooters are often bought sooner, with less ceremony, and the choice of number is usually smaller. This guide covers the sum, the table and some shortcuts for when you have only a moment.
It is a number game, not advice. The plate has no effect on how the vehicle rides.
The sum
- Take the digits of the registration number. Ignore the letters, by the usual convention.
- Add them and reduce to one digit from 1 to 9.
- Take your day of birth and reduce it the same way. That is your mulank.
- Look up the pair in the friendship table.
Example: a scooter with plate KL07WX1296. The digits are 0, 7, 1, 2, 9, 6. They sum to 25, then 2 + 5 = 7. The plate total is 7.
If you were born on the 16th, your mulank is 1 + 6 = 7. A total of 7 against mulank 7 is a friend. Born on the 12th instead: mulank 3. A total of 7 against 3 is neutral.
Which totals suit which mulank
From the traditional table, the plate totals that are friends, by mulank:
- Mulank 1: 1, 2, 3, 5, 9
- Mulank 2: 1, 2, 3, 5
- Mulank 3: 1, 2, 3, 5, 9
- Mulank 4: 4, 5, 6, 7
- Mulank 5: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9
- Mulank 6: 4, 5, 6, 7, 8
- Mulank 7: 4, 6, 7, 8
- Mulank 8: 6, 7, 8
- Mulank 9: 1, 3, 5, 9
If you want just one number to aim for, the total equal to your own mulank is the clean match, except for 4 and 8 where the table has some quirks. Each mulank has its own page, for example mulank 6 and mulank 9.
Two-wheeler specifics
You may not get to pick. Many dealers register a bike at the next number in the series, and a choice number is an extra step with an extra fee. If you want a particular total, ask at booking, not at delivery. How to book a fancy number online on Parivahan describes the portal route, which applies to two-wheelers in most states too.
Fees are usually lower. Fancy-number fees for two-wheelers are generally lower than for cars in the same state, though this varies. Check the state's current schedule.
The number is on the vehicle, not the person. A plate belongs to the registered vehicle. A bike bought for a family member is scored against the registered owner's birth date, if you follow that approach, or against yours if you are the main rider. The tradition is not consistent here. Pick one rule and tell your family which.
Shorter series, shorter checks. Two-wheeler plates have the same format as cars. The method does not change, but older plates can have fewer digits. A plate such as DL8SST1222 has digits 8, 1, 2, 2, 2 and a total of 6, even though the state code part is short.
A one-minute shortlist method
You are at the dealer and have two or three number options.
- Say your mulank out loud. If you are unsure, add the digits of your birth day.
- Add each option. For 1222, the digits sum to 7, then the series digits add on top.
- Cross out any total that clashes with your mulank.
- Of what is left, keep the one equal to your mulank. If none matches, keep a friend.
For mulank 5 this barely matters, since 5 has no clashes. For mulanks 1, 2, 3, 4 and 8 the clash list is long enough to be worth checking. See the calculator to run it on a phone in seconds.
What about a bike that is already registered
You can score it after the fact. The result will not change anything formal. If the total clashes, there is no single recommended step; people differ. Some shrug, and some choose a different total when they buy the next vehicle.
